Classical. Informative. Improvised.

"Sax Across Jazz" is a joint project of the Berliner Saxophon Ensemble and the Thilo Wolf Jazz Quartet.

The Berliner Saxophon Ensemble under the direction of Norbert Nagel and the Thilo Wolf Jazz Quartett found themselves in a styles overlapping project. The arch between classic and jazz is thereby stretched in an intelligent and entertaining manner.

Thilo Wolf, pianist and Norbert Nagel, saxophonist have been musical travelling companions for over ten years. Nevertheless they have always been nursing their individual musical concepts. In their new project, you find the warm sound of the Berliner Saxophon Ensemble under the direction of Norbert Nagel alongside the powerful Thilo Wolf Jazz Quartet.

Both ensembles interpret titles like; "Bolero" by Ravel, "Bilder einer Ausstellung" by Mussorgsky, and also the title melody of the animated movie "The Flintstones" in new and individual forms.

The repertoire includes compositions of classics and jazz. This is "CrossArt", an encounter, for which a practically new repertoire was written. The arrangers Thomas Zoller, Peter Fulda, Andreas Blüml, Norbert Nagel and Thilo Wolf rewrote titles of each ensemble's repertoire, jazzy modern here, classically honed there. Between titles, the audience is guided in an entertaining manner with explanations about the music, about the musicians as well as about the instruments. The unique challenge of this project is to maintain the identity of each group, while still creating music in one mould.

A culminating highlight for Sax Across Jazz was the concert tour to Shenzhen (China) and Hong Kong. As part of the cultural exchange program 2004 between the partner cities Nuremberg and Shenzhen, the "Cultur Week" of the region of Nuremberg was presented in Shenzhen. There, the Berliner Saxophon Ensemble and the Thilo Wolf Jazz Quartet gave proof of the quality and originality of their joint project.

A further highlight was the guest performance of Sax Across Jazz at the "International Beethoven Festival 2006" in Bonn.
